I had recently moved to New York and it was one of my first times wandering around the city alone. It had rained and the streets were covered with puddles, the air was dense and it was quiet enough to only hear background noise. It felt like one of those moments where the world stops but you’re lucky enough to continue. I was mesmerized by all of the signs and fluorescent lights that reflected on the patches of water in the street. A vision of chrome blue light only in the parts that were drenched, it was like my own temporary image. As the hours went by I watched the streets dry and the colors fade, but I kept the memory with me.

The lusciously colored Classic Deep Blue Diamond Discus encompass this in their light opal hues and dashes of orange found in the face, pectoral fin and tail. They create a soft gleam, despite their bright silver finish along the body. This elegant fish will glow and create an ambiance in whatever room they are in. The Deep Blue Discus generates that mystical sensation again of looking at this source of iridescent light. Collect one silent companion or more, they will create a magical experience in your home and a beautiful memory for those who come to visit.

This one definitely a female. Laid eggs 3 days post arrival in quarantine. She is top of the pecking order, guarding her eggs, Not expected. Crimson Star Alenquer watches eggs along with her. Don't know much about breeding aspects.

The group is fascinating to watch.

I got the fish they look great. From the photos of the blue Diamond discus, they have red eyes. This one I have doesn’t. Is there a way i can order one that specifically has red eyes? I ordered these fish for a client of mine. He wanted fish with red eyes, such as in the photos on your site. Like the fish in the tank currently I showed you that have red eyes, these I just ordered do not, so no I'm not happy he isn’t.  I'm not vastly knowledgeable on discus but if you have any of the fish I just ordered that distinctly have red eyes, I’d like to order them. 3-day Update from Jason: Dude. This is the fish now. (2nd photo) I think we are good. I'm reading higher ph can bring it out.

Jay From Michael: All fish we select will have some degree of variation. All blue diamond discus indeed have red eyes when they are younger. However, in certain mature specimens, it may not be as pronounced.

I have to admit that they are the most beautiful fish I have ever had. I love their shy and dramatic personality. They are mesmerizing to watch, and I can’t believe I haven’t learned about them sooner. Thank you for taking good care of them. The packaging was excellent.

We had a cold front come through Montana, which is not unusual, even for May, so they arrived a bit cold and sluggish, but they quickly perked up after acclimating. All five are happy and magnificent.

Photos are attached. Again, thank you for the excellent customer service and your attentiveness. I love my little gang. They all say hello :)

Yes, everything is fine. I'd like to order some tank mates from you. Let me know when you get Apistogramma agassizii in as well as an algae eater/ bottom feeder.  Current aquarium is a 55 but will be upgrading to a 75 or 90 as the discus grow. From Michael: 75g is the minimum tank size for discus keeping. I would upgrade first before acquiring any additional fish.

The fish arrived safely, and look great. The only issue I had was that I wanted to receive them on the 25th of May. They arrived on the 17th. Luckily my wife was here or they would have baked in the Florida heat.  I followed your acclimation procedures. I also keep saltwater fish as well. My question is food...what should I start them out with? Tried brine shrimp...but no interest. Thanks!! From Michael: try frozen bloodworms that you can purchase from any local fish store. Also, check out my food section for ideas. Make sure your temps are on the high side: 87-88F.

Fish are doing great. I am a little upset in the size of the Cobalt Blue Discus. It is a lot smaller than the other one. It doesn't appear to be the size I ordered or expected. It looks nothing like the picture on the website. I'm sorry but I'm not 100% satisfied. Here are some pics. of the fish in my tank. The Deep Blue discus is what I expected but the Cobalt is smaller. I'm NOT trying to complain really, I just thought they would be the same size. Sorry.. it is my fault for thinking like that. From Michael: Rod, I just looked up your order and your cobalt was supposed to be from 3-3.5", which is a baby-sized fish. Make sure you're measuring from tip of nose to end of tail. I may have upgraded your deep blue, but it does NOT mean I downgraded your cobalt. Does that make sense?

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.

Q: How are your stated fish measurements conducted?

A: All measurements are made from tip of nose to end of tail. Photographs are representative of the strain or variety, and not the exact specimens that will be shipped.
