Sunny afternoons in early spring are my absolute favorite time of the year. Dandelions and daffodils bloom all over the place and the atmosphere is filled with inexplicable joy. I get the same feeling when I look at the Golden Lollipop Discus.

Beautifully round as the sun in the clear blue sky, this fish is reminiscent of all things cheerful: a Sunday breakfast of sunny-side-up eggs and bacon, my favorite childhood song “Yellow submarine”, I’d sing it whenever the legendary Beatles’ song came on the radio in the living room. My dad kept a fragrant piece of amber that he had found by the seaside next to the old radio. I watch this fish and am transported back in time again, this time to my days in college. I remember that fragrant bouquet of daffodils I got from my college sweetheart, and a bright yellow dress that I wore to our first date. We went for milkshakes that lovely afternoon and “Yellow submarine” was blasting from the juke box.

It’s fascinating how by simply observing this yellow-orange fish swimming in the tank I am reminded of a sunrise in spring and the way that it makes the surroundings golden. I want a fish like that in my own tank so that I could experience this joyous season all year round, when the dandelions and daffodils start to bloom and fill the warming air with cheerfulness and beauty.

The six discuses that I received are doing well in my tank.  I'm very happy with the Super Eruption and German Red Turquoise discuses, beautiful, healthy fish.  The Golden Lollipop discuses that I ordered are not what I ordered.  Based on what you have in your list of discuses for sale, you sent me Golden Valentine discuses instead of Golden Lollipop.  I would have preferred that you had notified me to inform me that you didn't have Golden Lollipop discuses in stock and given me the option to choose something else rather than sending me the Golden Valentines.  It's not like I can send these back for an exchange, but, you should at the very least refund me the difference in cost plus taxes for the Golden Valentines and Golden Lollipops. Regards, Mike M. From Michael: Your order was correctly fulfilled. In fact, in the rare event I am unable to or unwilling to fulfill an order, the customer will always be notified beforehand. Valentine discus are more expensive than lollipops and have a fine spotted pattern throughout their body. You should be very happy with your fish, because at 3.0", it is exactly what you ordered. Merry Christmas!

    Well, Michael,

As the video above shows, the discus arrived perfectly and are not stressed in any way that I can see. They are in their own tank with plenty of room except for my pesky test fish I use to “test” any new tank setup.

Your “picks” are perfect for my first order from you. These guys are going to thrive without any problem at all.

The “reds” I ordered I think will exhibit their red color in time. They are a very dark blue right now.

They are chowing down what I feed all my discus, frozen blood worms, frozen beef and turkey heart. I'll plant the plants later on today. All my tanks start with R/O water, Fluval filters, 82-degree water, plants from Modern Aquarium, and frozen food from Ken’s Fish.

I couldn't be happier with this order. I'll order some larger ones on my next order.

    Many thanks, William (Rick) G

Hey Michael, not only did they arrived extremely healthy looking discus, no frayed fins active and upright, eating right away. The are truly beautiful. You really  went out of your way to pick fish as close to what i asked for. They are truly beautiful. I was really  impressed with the packing, loved the rubber band closures , no leaking. Triple thick bags, WAO. think my wife , who unpacked and acclimated them (I was working). She saved all the packing materials, so I would see them. Great improvement over all. Even FedEx arrived early. Could not really say anything more positive. Yes. Box well labeled, sure helped a lot with handling. I was hesitant to order due to prior unpleasant experience(ups). Happy I order these 5, 5in discus. Fyi, this quarantine tank has a color enhancing light, but beautiful with no light at all. Michael did not pay pay me to say this.

The Red Diamond has a beautiful, vibrant, striking red color, very well shaped and perfectly sized. She’s my tank beauty and shows her color nicely with the light blue background I have.

The Golden Lollipop is also well shaped and nice sized. He glides gracefully through my tank and his golden yellow color really pops with the driftwood pieces I have for decoration. Fish came healthy and eating. I bought this fish hoping I would get what was in the picture. I actually freaked out a little when I saw what I received because it didn’t look like anything in the photos. It actually had no color when I first opened the package. I spoke with Michael and he insures it’s the same fish and that I have to grow it out since I purchased a baby fish. The color will come with age. I really hope it does.( I do notice more color after having them for two weeks) I’m honestly still not fully happy with it but I do hope I can update this post with a 5 star review down the line!

I got all of them today with safe and healthy except one discus that has some red spot around the face and the mouth (See the pictures). I'm wondering if it is okay or natural? BTW I'm very glad to have them eventually. And I'd like to say thank you for the beautiful fish. All they are calm and still. I'll follow your guide until settling down in the new environment. I feel all the rest of things are under my responsibility and duty to take care of them well. Once they acclimate, I will post some videos on the email or your website. Thanks again. Much appreciated. BTW, all my family is very happy to have these gorgeous creatures. From Michael: The small lacerations you see are caused by shipping stress. The fish must have hit its face against the bags during transit. It will heal within a week and touch base with you.

Greetings from Indiana. Michael, here's a pic of my Golden Lollipop. I was hoping for a fish with a red eye and more red around the circumference. Dear Mr. Li: After receiving a shipping, I noticed the Red Fuji Discus has a lot of black spots on gills and fins. I though that was from the natural born, but after 2 days, others fish stated having black spots on gills, fins, and body. On the day three, all the fish got it. I started raised the temperature to 88 and used API-General Cure for treatment. Try to hold off my second shipment for one week or two. Anything I can do to help my fish. I am new to discus. Thank you, An From Michael: The small black spots are what is called peppering in discus. It is normal for any pigeon strain, and does not indicate the fish are sick.

The Small Golden Lollipop and Fuji Red are the stars of my tank. Interestingly, they “hang” together in the tank most always, traveling from end to end, and up and down in my 125G tank. They are beautiful together, contrasting one another, and demanding everyone’s eyes and attention upon first sight. They are social and friendly with all other tankmates, as well as our family of admirers who sit and gaze at their graceful beauty... it’s so relaxing. They actually seem to get excited to see and interact with us (perhaps showing off a bit), after only a few weeks in our home. I have had no experience dealing with any other Discus breeder or online supplier, and based on my initial experience with Discus.com and Michael Li... I have no reason to look elsewhere!

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.
