The majestic Red Eagle discus is derived from the Checkerboard and Pigeon bloodlines. The Red Eagle has been bred to possess a more expansive and less deterministic pattern that is typically seen with traditional Pigeon discus. The individual “grids” are also much larger, and there exists greater amounts of spacing between cells. A stunning fish that will surely delight new and experienced keepers alike.

To say the Red Eagle Discus is dazzling is quite an understatement. It is mesmerizing in that one can look into its intricate pattern for hours, bewitched by its beauty. The honeycomb pattern is quite reminiscent of a red and white Rorschach test. You can watch its delicate body float throughout your aquarium and try to decipher the meaning of its spots. There is something to be said about the simplicity of a two-tone color way, it allows you to focus on each detail individually with a richer experience. This fish is definitely a living centerpiece in any tank, a talking point for anyone who catches a glimpse at its intricacies. Visitors will definitely find themselves following each movement, as the stark contrast between the candy colored crimson and pure white create a visual masterpiece within an aquarium. The Red Eagle Discus in a Honeycomb Pattern would make a welcome addition to any devout aquarist’s tank. Anyone searching for their next obsession have no need to look further. This discus speaks for itself.

It looks pretty damn good now though! The fish look completely different after just one day. Most of them ate today, the sapphire is a bit of a bully and chases everyone else away from the food. Looking pretty solid for a three day old tank! 64 of your fish in one spot. Thank you, more than I could ever have hoped for.

Hello, I believe the order I received was incorrect and I received different types of fish then I ordered. I would like to work something out so we can continue to do business in the future. I attached pictures to show the discrepancies. I received pigeon bloods instead of checkerboard red eagles. The pattern is pigeon and not circles of the red eagle checkerboard. I honestly would just like to get the correct fish I ordered and  hope we can work something out cause like I said I would like to continue doing business In the future. From Michael: The Red Eagles belong to the pigeon family, and there will certainly be similarities between these two fish types. The fish you ordered are 3.5-4", and are still considered juveniles. Please keep me posted as the fish develop. If you remain unhappy with their pattern in adulthood, I will credit or work something out with you. By the way, your fish look magnificent -- thank you for your photo.

Hey Michael, yes I received the fish shipment. Thanks for the fish! 6 of the 7 discus are doing well and were comfortable enough to eat. One of the red eagles is on his side and has not moved much but I will see how he looks in the morning and let you know an update. I’ll attach a picture of his current state.

I’m happy with the fish you selected. The yellow leopard has more peppering than I would prefer, but my tank is bright and hopefully it will fade with a good diet. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing née strains you have in the future. From Michael: All pigeon discus will have some degree of peppering. This is normal. With bright lighting and a light-colored substrate, it will be a moot issue.

Fish arrived stressed, in poor condition, and on the smaller side. No quality control. Overall poor communication, fish were shipped to my house without my consent, confirmation or knowledge. When I confronted Michael about this, his answer was " we run a large scale operation and don't have the time to confirm with every buyer in regards to shipping status". Buyer be aware as your fish may arrive any day without your knowledge. I purchased many Discus fish from reputable sellers throughout the years and this by far was the worst experience. If you are looking for a quality fish, then discus.com is not the place for you. From Michael: There are two issues at hand here, and this customer is conflating logistical smoothness with fish quality. In our initial conversation, the customer instructed me to ship "as early as possible," and then complains when the fish arrive earlier than he was expecting. Furthermore, it was revealed that all of Discus.com's outgoing notification emails were landing in the customer's email spam folder. He was emailed multiple times with logistical information and status updates. Alas, he never even received his original order receipt! Fish arrived in poor condition because they were sitting unattended on his front doorstep for over 8 hours after arrival. Moshe, if you're spending this much $, please check your spam folder and take some responsibility before you accuse others of poor communication. This was a very unfortunate outcome, as I was expecting an ecstatic customer response. In spite of the customer's awful photos, you can tell the discus are beautiful.

Another wonderful day time spent with my son and a trip to the airport to pick up two new magnificent discus. A Blue Diamond x Cobalt and a Red Eagle. These fish are just stunning. As I described to Michael earlier the Blue Cobalt is a beautiful mix of blue and green. I’ve seen this color combination in marine fish but no fish pulls these colors off like a discus and the Cobalt Blue, you just have to see it for yourself. The Red Eagle I would describe as a beautiful mix of red and white bands. I also really love the symmetry of the red and white. Like all the discus I have purchased from Michael just stunning. I can’t wait to add these beautiful fish to my main discus display tank.

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.

Q: How are your stated fish measurements conducted?
