Michael I ordered discus from you a few years ago and last night received a second order. One of the bags leaked with very little water remaining and the pearl pigeon snakeskin was the victim. He was still alive but barely. He hasn't really moved since last night. The other 9 are beautiful and doing great. I'm sending this to give you a heads up. I will continue to monitor the pearl pigeon. Well so far the fish is finally "waking up ". In the last hour he is beginning to swim a little. I actually think he will be ok. However the cardboard box was soaked and the styrofoam container was not taped shut and leaked. Michael I appreciate your response and interest. I will keep you posted on the fishes progress. By the way he is a great looking fish. Merry Christmas to me! Thank you Michael. Great 3.5-4" beauties

    Hi Michael,

Everything is going well, and discus are thriving.

I did suffer one loss after about a month. But he was the smallest of the pack and didn't do so well when establishing a pecking order.

The rest are doing very well. I have one established pair. They laid eggs twice now. They even hatched the first time, but unfortunately, all disappeared on the 4th day.

Sad, but I didn't have anywhere to separate them from the community.

They have a wealthy diet of beef heart, blood worms, brine shrimp, and spirulina mix. All are eating well and healthy so far.

I have a 60-gallon tank with two canisters and UV sterilizer on the timer hooked directly to one of the canister filters.

I wish I had more room for them, but that is all I can do in my small two-bedroom apartment.

It really means a lot you are checking in.

    So thank you very much.

You've outdone yourself in my last order, so there are no recommendations from my end. Your service and fish selection are terrific!

    Thanks again.

    Hi Michael,

Yes, all fish arrived healthy and well yesterday, June 9. Slight fin burns here and there, as expected, but they are recovering well and had their first meal by the evening. Not sure if all of them ate but I saw some pick at blood worms.

The selection of fish you made for me is magnificent! They are much larger than what I ordered, trying to watch my budget, so I appreciate your gift.

Attached are few images from this morning. They are magnificent and coloring up quite nice!

    Thank you!

    Good afternoon Michael,

The fish arrived yesterday morning and are doing great. I am extremely happy with the ones you picked out for me. They are acclimating well and getting along great with their tankmates. They all seem to be eating well and are starting to explore the aquarium. I have them in a 210 gallon with live plants, tetras, rams, corys, shrimps, and others. Can't wait to see them grow and develop their colors.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

Very happy with my purchase. I selected 3-3.5", knowing that it will take some time to get full color. All three fish I ordered came in great condition. No signs of stress or damage. They acclimated quickly to my aquarium and were eating plenty of food within a day. Photo was taken just under 2 weeks after receiving.

Bad quality, sunken in forehead, pectoral fins almost completely gone, and they don’t look anything like the pictures and probably never will. Definitely won’t be buying discus here ever again. From Michael: Isaac, I followed up with you multiple times after you received your fish and never heard so much as a peep from you -- and now this? We starve our fish for 48 hours prior to shipping. Otherwise they will kill themselves by defecating and urinating in their own shipping bags. This is standard procedure. It is common for fins to be damaged during transit -- they will grow back. Contrary to your sentiments, according to your photo, your fish are matched PERFECTLY with the photos found on the product page you ordered from. To be honest, I'm not even sure what exactly I did wrong here to deserve a 1-star review from you. Brutal, man.

I hope all is well up in cold New York and that you had a good Thanksgiving. I really would like to write a review because I do feel you really provided me with excellent service and communication, answering all my questions, emails, and phone calls promptly and professionally, making me feel like Me and my order were both important to you. I know I expressed some reservations about the appearance of the fish I received and you had stated that you and I were going to have another conversation about that sometime this week (which stays between you and I). I really want to let others know, via my review, how pleased I am with the quality, the health, the shipping process, the service, and basically all aspects of our transaction which was my first time ever doing business with you. I am a pretty straightforward guy and when I am pleased with something, I let others know. Just like when I'm displeased with something I share it, backing it up it up with the reasons why. But, I would never say or write anything negative about an individual, company, or transaction without 1st giving that person the opportunity to hear about it and correct we concerns. Thats just who I am. That being said, as previously stated, I am pleased with basically every aspect of our transaction and would like the opportunity to share it on your site.

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.
