Obtaining a Breeding Pair, Spawning, and Timing

In this article, we’ll add a few more suggestions to help you become a successful discus breeder!

HOW DO I OBTAIN A BREEDING PAIR?

The most challenging part of discus breeding is finding the right couple. Discus are picky! They want to choose their mates themselves.

You have two options. The first is to buy a discus couple. Since a discus breeding pair can cost a few hundred dollars, breeders usually don’t buy discus couples. Instead, they usually follow the other option. Your other option is to raise discus together in a group and hope that they will partner off themselves. Keep a group of at least six members. Discus are very likely to eventually pair off themselves. You’ll notice if two discus couple themselves since they will establish a boundary in your tank and defend it against trespassers.

WHAT ARE DETAILS I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SPAWNING?

When your fish spawn, don’t worry about the eggs that look whitish, which are definitely infertile. As for the others, it is possible that the parents may eat some of them and protect some.

WHAT DETAILS ABOUT TIMING SHOULD I KNOW?

After about three weeks, move the fry into a separate tank from their parents. Otherwise, the fry might try to eat their parents’ scales. Once the discus are no longer taking care of their fry, they will begin a new cycle of reproduction. After reading this suggestions, check out the rest of our breeding articles. My Discus pair have begun to spawn every week since Christmas. The eggs are fertile. As they hatch, the parents seem to fight over the babies; which then soon disappear. What should I do?
