How to Prevent Diseases

HOW CAN I PREVENT DISCUS DISEASES?

Taking commonsense steps, you can successfully prevent almost all discus diseases. Often, diseases are the results of nutritional problems or environmental problems. You can prevent diseases by feeding your discus a healthy diet, keeping your water clean, and closely observing your fish.

FEED YOUR DISCUS A HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET

Just like with humans, discus’ health largely depends on nutrition. Feed your discus enough protein, especially meats, since they supply amino acids. Amino acids are very important for discus health.

The only problem that may arise from feeding your discus live food is if you over feed them and the leftover food emits harmful chemicals. This can potentially harm your fish. To prevent the leftover food from deteriorating your water, use a powerful biological filter in your aquarium and regularly change your water.

KEEP THE WATER FILTERED

One of the most important things you can do to keep your discus healthy is to keep your water adequately filtered. Reverse osmosis is one of the best ways to filter your water. Reverse osmosis is possible with the help of the semi-permeable membrane inside of the filter that allows only water molecules to pass through it. It removes minerals, trace elements, and any other substances, producing the pure water that your discus needs. A few minerals should be added into the water to recreate a healthy environment.

KEEP A WATCHFUL EYE ON YOUR DISCUS

Be sure to closely observe your fish. Often, behavior or physical problems can be noticed simply by your observation. If you do see a problem, provide the proper care as soon as possible.

Keep a watchful eye on everything that goes on in your small ecosystem to ensure that your fish are in a safe, healthy, and happy environment. If conditions are not excellent, your fish may develop diseases. Even if you are scrupulous with your discus care, other problems can arise from other fish in your tank, your equipment, or other reasons.
