Just as the Peony is considered the “Queen of the Flowers,” the Discus is frequently called the “King of the Aquarium Fishes,” and for the same reasons, both are grand, brightly colored, have unique shapes and are available in a great many varieties. The majestic, elegant, and lovely Discus fish earns their title with their stately elegance and noble bearing and are often considered the high point of tropical fish keeping. The stunning Blue Leopard Discus certainly earns its place in that Royal moniker with its fluorescent sky blue finely patterned striations over the brilliant orangey-red base. These colors and patterns extend to the tip of its pectoral and dorsal fins, giving the impression of speeding even while almost stopped. The tail fin is translucent with a touch of orangey pattern on the bottom edge, and the eyes are a deep burnt-orange with a black streak across it, making it an incredibly striking fish for your collection.

The Blue Leopard Discus’ quiet, flowing, and graceful natures inspire attention and exude tranquility like no other fish. Their disc shape bodies and narrow width draw in the eyes, and their finely etched patterns of blue and orange will leave you relaxed with their near hypnotic dance across your tank. Available in sizes ranging from 2.0” to 6,” these Discus are ready to step into the spotlight in your aquarium.

After a very rough start, the shipping got delayed due to bad weather and several of the original discus died in transit, the remaining discus were quarantined and recovered nicely.

The German Red Turquoise and  Blue Tiger Snakeskin were an instant hit in my quarantine tank and they began eating the following morning. Once I was confident they were going to make it I placed them into my show tank. Their colors started coming back quickly and they took over as an awesome complement to my tank.

Michael was very helpful in getting replacement discus to me very quickly and several days later the Blue Leopard Orange Base and Yellow Pigeon arrived without incident. They were much larger than the original two, but are otherwise amazing specimens. They took nearly 2 days for them to get acclimated and the Leopard now rules the tank. The Yellow Pigeon doesn’t seem to be as strong as the others, and even though it’s the largest in the tank it hides a lot.

Blue Leopard Orange Base - amazing specimen. He’s the king of my tank, and is always trying to keep the two little guys away which is an all day job. He eats well and has great patterns and color. Wish he was a little more orange. There was some ammonia burning on the fins when he arrived which will go away

    - maybe use larger bags for the larger fish which may help alleviate that issue.

Fish arrived a bit ago. Acclimating them now. The size of the discus is awesome, Larger than I thought they would be! Altums are very active. I will definitely be leaving Positive feedback with you about my experience with discus.com And will definitely be Choosing discus.com for my future fish purchases. One last question about the angels. Have they been treated at the facility before shipping or would you suggest I treat during my quarantine and if so what would you recommend? I usually treat my new wild discus with prazi pro and metronidazole during their quarantine.

Haven't lost any altums since those first 3 And they are already eating freeze-dried black worms and texture color granules. The disgusts have nibbled on the freeze-dried blackworms and they are slowly eating the color granules. I will definitely send a better picture of each individual fish tomorrow when I have time to sit down and not rush. I'm very glad I decided to order from discus.com. I work at Petco in the fish department Saturdays and Sunday till close and yesterday I showed a lot of people the pictures of the fish I ordered in from you and they love them and there is a few discus geeks as customers so hopefully they'll get on your site and place some orders sometime.

So excited caught video of my discus spawning. Male leopard guarding the eggs while the female is eating. Then the female takes her turn guarding while the male eats. From Michael: Spectacular! Congrats, new discus dad! Successful spawning behavior is the ultimate proof that your water conditions are correct.

Ok keeping an eye on it not being active like the rest the two ocean green started exploring this afternoon so no worries about them. But the little white spots on German are concerning. Raised the temp a little and added a bit of aquarium salt, I try not to use meds unless it's the last resort. Thanks for being so invested in your product guaranteed repeat business from me and I will let anyone interested know about you and discus.com. From Michael: Always use Paraguard for transit-caused ammonia burns. Everything will heal within a week.

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.
