Filtration Media

HOW DO I USE FILTRATION MEDIA IN MY DISCUS AQUARIUM?

Different filtration media cater to a variety of needs. The first and most important filtration media you need is a substance to remove debris from the water. Before adding any filtration media to your filter, first thoroughly soak it in water. Many breeders use a wool pad underneath a Seachem Matrix. These two products together ensure that any debris, small and large, are removed before the water enters the next stage of the filtration system. The water then passes through another wool pad underneath the Seachem Carbon. This step ensures that any chemicals that the biofilter didn’t pick up don’t get to re-enter the aquarium. Finally, the water is siphoned through Seachem Purigen, which acts not only as a chemical eliminator, but also polishes the water and makes it look pristine. All three stages of filtration work together in harmony to keep the water conditions ideal. The wool pad siphons out all of the debris (mechanical). The Matrix serves as a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize (biological), while the Carbon and Purigen remove any excess chemicals and polish the water (chemical). Many filtration media are available for mechanical, biological and chemical filtration alike.
