In aquaculture, Malachite Green is often used as an anti-fungal for eggs in hatcheries. It is most effective against external parasites. Malachite Green is also quite effective in controlling fungus on fish eggs. Disorders treated by Malachite Green include the following:
- Egg Fungus – Serves as a safe disinfectant for fish eggs.
- Ichthyophthirius multi files – Small white spots resembling sand, fish scratches against objects.
- Oödinium pillars – Also known as Velvet, this is actually caused by a parasite.
- Saprolegnia – A freshwater mold that often attacks fish eggs.

Description
Malachite Green is used at 0.05 – 0.1 ppm (active ingredient). The stock solution is prepared by using 3.7 grams grams of Malachite Green per 1 liter of water. To treat fish, use 1 ml of stock solution per 5 liter or 5ml of stock solution per 25 liters of aquarium or pond water. Apply to water on 3 alternate days.
To treat shrimp or marine invertebrates, use at 0.1 – 0.2 ppm active ingredient on 3 alternate days. or in US measures: Malachite Green is used at 0.05 – 0.1 ppm (active ingredient). The stock solution is prepared by using 14 grams of Malachite Green per 3790 mls (one gallon) of water. To treat fish, use 1 ml of stock solution per ten gallons or 5ml (1 tsp) of stock solution per 50 gallons of aquarium or pond water. Apply to water on 3 alternate days.
To treat shrimp or marine invertebrates, use at 0.1 – 0.2 ppm active ingredient on 3 alternate days. Formalin in conjunction with Malachite Green is used for fish at the dosage rate of 10 – 25 ppm and 0.05 – 0.1 ppm respectively. Dosage for shrimp or marine invertebrates is 10 – 25 ppm Formalin and 0.1 – 0.2 ppm Malachite Green. For egg disinfection, treat at 5 ppm for 10 minutes. Precautions Avoid breathing Malachite dust.
Wear protective gloves, clothing and respirator. If possible, avoid air movement when weighing or dispensing the Malachite Green powder. Malachite Green is toxic to small fry, some varieties of tetras, ornamental catfish such as Pimelodidae, as well as bluegill and bass. Inconsistent results may occur if Malachite Green is used when water pH is 9 or above, or water temperature is over 21 degrees Celsius. Note: Always test a few organisms for potential toxicity to Malachite Green before beginning treatment on large numbers. Sodium Sulfide may be used as a decolorizing agent for Malachite Green on skin and clothing.
