Do you remember the old screensavers on the computers from around 10 or 15 years ago? The ones that showed tropical beaches, the sun high in a cloudless sky, two chairs affixed on the sand, facing the water that seemed to be just begging you to come swim in its translucent blue beauty? These Red Super Eruption DiscusHigh Bodies would be right at home in any one of them, or any tropical paradise for that matter, and simply looking at them whisks me off to those places near and far, imaging myself with a nice cool beverage in one hand, listening to the tide roll peacefully as I relax in tranquility and paradise.

And the fish is BRIGHT! It really pops. The vibrant yellows and reds of the animal make me think of candy, both old and new. Lemon and cherry Starbursts, or maybe the Fruit Stripe gum that had flavor that only lasted for 10 seconds, or maybe those candy buttons on a sheet of paper from the 60s. Whatever they are, just looking at the fish for a second makes me want to be hanging out on a beach with some candy and puts me in a relaxed state of mind. It’s really actually quite surprising to me that these fish can create such strong feelings in me. And good and peaceful ones!

Did you receive the other pics I sent? Also one of my fish has two white spots on the side when I got it. I didn’t say anything because I remembered reading that that can happen during shipping. But the spots are gone now. I can tell that u feed those by hand sometimes. Just how they respond. The other fish I got from you they don’t do it as much. Probably because they were younger. But the new fish they all eat from my hand when I feed them . It feels funny to have numerous fish nibbling from your hand at the same time :-)

My fish have acclimated perfectly, see the photos, they are so stunning.  They are eating and getting along with everyone. I will upload these and review, I just need to look over the instructions there as I'm a little IT challenged.

I recieved 10 discus altogether. They came on time, exactly when I requested, and packaged very well.

I cannot believe the color changes this fish goes through in seconds! Absolutely stunning, obviously! It's not even an adult yet. I love it just as it is. If it never changes as it ages I won't mind at all. I can't even imagine that this fish could get any better! This one was my favorite from the entire group I ordered. When I'm watching my discus tank I always end up watching this one the most. I lose so much time in front of my tank, I have to watch out that I'm not late for work. Lol. This eruption barely needed much time to gain its color back from shipping, but I can say it's beautiful when it arrives but even more now that its recovered its colors! It reminds me of magma and its colors bounce around from reds, orange, and black to shiny blues mixed in. Michael, truly has the best selection, variety, and quality of discus above anything else out there! Exceptional service as well.

These are accurately sized fish to what I ordered. Quality discus is here at this site and great customer service as well. Don't ever doubt it. Being patient on your order will pay off, but don't be afraid to reach out to Michael on any concerns. His response is quick during business hours.

***Believe it or not, the pictures depict one fish. The variation on just this one High Body Super Red Eruption that I ordered still blows my mind. I want to include good pictures for the review as most reviews show a bunch and it's a guessing game which one you're wanting to actually see. I hope you find this helpful!

    Thank you Michael!

The fish arrived safely, and look great. The only issue I had was that I wanted to receive them on the 25th of May. They arrived on the 17th. Luckily my wife was here or they would have baked in the Florida heat.  I followed your acclimation procedures. I also keep saltwater fish as well. My question is food...what should I start them out with? Tried brine shrimp...but no interest. Thanks!! From Michael: try frozen bloodworms that you can purchase from any local fish store. Also, check out my food section for ideas. Make sure your temps are on the high side: 87-88F.

A few years back, I ‘won’ a 6″ Alenquer discus. It was then sent via USPS from the East Coast (NOT discus.com) to my home in AZ. Upon receipt, I hurriedly rushed inside to open the box to see my new discus. As I was preparing to open the box, I noted the stink of dead fish. I looked closer at the entire box, and one corner was soaked. Knowing this can’t be good, I opened the box and there inside the plastic bag was my dead ‘prize’. All the water leaked out of the bag. I was mortified and heart broken. I contacted the breeder and sent pics. He advised he would send me a new one, he was shocked this happened, blah blah blah. This time, I had the fish sent via UPS to the UPS store 1 block from my house. When I received notice it had been delivered, I immediately went to go get him. They handed me the box…oh no, I smelled fish again. And this box was even more wet. I asked the UPS worker if he could open the box for me. He did, and there was a 5″ Alenquer discus in the bag, on its side, in barely a half inch of water. He hadn’t died YET, but was barely alive. I rushed him home and with no time to spare, put him in my hospital tank which was all ready set to go. Well, um, yeah, he passed within 24 hrs. Again, heartbroken.

Over the past couple years, I learned about Michael Li. I followed his website and really wanted to purchase one of his discus, but was extremely fearful of ‘causing the death’ of another discus. I exchanged emails w/Michael a couple times when I needed his expertise w/one of my discus.

It was time. Maybe past time. I decided to purchase a discus from Michael Li. Scared to death I was!

I choose a super red eruption discus, approximately 4 1/2″. The discus arrived a day ahead of schedule…. and he was alive and looked great!! Thankfully, I was off work and had his quarantine tank all set up. I followed Michael’s process on the website for acclimating him, and it went very well. He’s doing great, he is BEYOND gorgeous, and I look forward to introducing him to his disc-mates in a few weeks. He will live his life in comfort, be well fed, spoiled, get hand fed on occasion, and will fit in great in my 92gal Red Sea w/7 other discus that are around the same size. Thank you, Michael!!! Not only did I receive a gorgeous discus, but I learned that I can trust Michael to ship appropriately and safely. Going forward, Michael will be my breeder/dealer for all things discus (and so much more)!!!

Hi Michael, so far they are fine. They are grouping together and not moving around or eating yet. I would assume this is normal behavior. They are all beautiful and healthy looking. The golden lollipop doesn't have any red on the fins or the eyes. Will that change as they grow? Thanks so much! Neil W.

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.
