The dramatic red-and-white pattern on the Checkerboard Pigeon, as eye-popping as a Matisse cut-out, provokes an endless series of associations: a diagram of a cerebellum, the imprint of a wonky waffle iron, a dress in a 1970s-loud print, or if seen from a distance, a rosy hedgehog. Its cheeky, waggle-lined exterior is jauntily complex – simply put, there’s so much going on with the Checkerboard Pigeon you could stare at it for hours.

The boldness of the fish’s eye-popping red-and-white is offset by its delicate, translucent tail and lightly lined mouth area. A red eye seems to stare in astonishment at the colors and shapes doing zig-zags behind it. This discus is sure to enhance any collection with its wild yet subtle vibrancy.

Hi Michael. It looks like Mr.Yellow has swollen and reddish lips. He was a ferocious eater and a bully. Now he still eats but not as much, and he's not as active. Do you think this might be an injury, or something else? Thank you. And we love tbe fish! They are doing better overall. From Michael: It means that they're fighting with each other. Leave it alone, it'll heal up by itself.

I like the Altum Flora, Sonia likes the RCP. One of the Altums keeps laying down. Hopefully he will be ok. I don't have the light on and the camera actually makes it look brighter than it is. I will send some good pics in a few days. We are very happy!

Wow.....what a terrific experience I've had in getting my fish from Discus.com. The fish are absolutely stunning and I'm ultra happy sitting by them watching their majestic swimming and aquarium presence.

I must say, however, that the fantastic effort Mike Li put into helping me, answering my questions, and even texting/calling me to see how things were going is THE most important part of the whole experience. He so very much wanted me to be happy, know certain facts, and have success with my five gorgeous fish. All too often, sellers make the sale and then drop off the face of the planet. Not Mike......he made this newbie to Discus keeping feel reassured and greatly lessened the anxieties associated in such an endeavor. I've been into fish for fifty years, Koi pounding for twenty, and I'm a retired biology teacher, but there was much to learn from him for which I'm indeed grateful. I even have a few fish on the Discus.com wishlist as I'm sure to buy from him again after my current five are all settled and established. Great products with super service.....what a combination. The money spent was well worth it......I could not be more pleased. Since there are no 'star' ratings for the transaction\review, I'm using these five stars as my rating (five being the best).........

I recently purchased three discus from Discus.com 1) Albino Platinum Discus, 2) Checkerboard Pigeon Discus, Thick Line and 3) Blue Tiger Carnation Turquoise Discus, Vertical Pattern.

Living on Vancouver Island in Canada I was a little hesitant to order fish from the states. But with the help of customer service we Finally manage to find the airport fairly close to me and I picked my fish up and brought them home. The first thing I noticed was how well they were packaged each fish was individually wrapped and bag several times and also a heat pack was placed in to keep the fish warm. Placing the bags in the aquarium I noticed how beautiful the fish were. Fish have been released for one day and are already eating and moving around the aquarium quite happily.

This is just a test run, but with the results that I have so far I would definitely recommend buying fish through Discus.com. Looking forward to my next order… as soon as I build a bigger aquarium.

    One happy customer thanks!

    Sincerely yours:

    Greg S

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.
