The reason I always walked behind my best friend, little Jimmy, was not because I was lazy nor slow. See lil’ jimmy had these bright backpacks with bright images of beautiful fish on the hind pocket.
There is one I can vividly remember which had pictures of reddish little fish. It caught my eye because the fish were not uniformly colored yet still intensely red. There were patches of a lighter pigmentation – almost white, with a brush of faint red. I liked the head in particular because the lighter tones could appear either mild red or yellow chiffon whenever I blinked my eyes. I loved walking behind little jimmy on our way to school. It always gave me a warm feeling in the morning.
Later on I learned that these bright fish were Valentine Discus Discus. I have to get Jimmy one of these for his wedding anniversary. To remember those beautiful days in the lower grades, long gone.
