I was much younger when we used to hop in the convertible and take a trip down to the beach. My dad would turn on the golden oldies, and we would cruise the coastline with the salty air whipping through our hair. The Golden Pigeon Leopard Discus reminds me of how the sun would look as it was setting behind the ocean. Those same red, white, and gold tones instantly transport me to a time when life was simple, and a good chat with my dad would solve all my problems.

To think that those gorgeous sunsets happened over fish just like these. One could even question if the sunset itself stole its beauty from the majesty of the world beneath the ocean surface. Philosophy aside, every time I see one of these fish, I can smell the ocean air and hear the Beach Boys as clear as day.

It’s funny how a fish can spark such a feeling deep in your soul. A tank full of Golden Pigeon Leopard Discus’ is like having a personal sunset every day. Turn on some Beach Boys, grab a drink, and let your stress melt away while you enjoy a beach getaway in your living room.

Hello, I just wanted to thank you for the amazing fish!! only 1 of the 4 is being shy, was laying on its side and hiding but is starting to come around and exploring the tank. The other 3 are already playing in the bubbles up and down, and exploring all over. Got the lights dimmed and temp at 87. Super impressed!!

We have 12 tanks with 8 in the basement with pics attached. We have 2 water bridges that the fish love and explore both tanks nonstop. The bigger bridge is for the Koi and the big common plecos (we have 14 plecos alone, mostly the 4-6 inches). We designed the big bridge which took 2 months to find a company to build it, crazy! Turned out sweet.

All of our tanks have 3 to 4x the recommended filtration which I feel is huge keeping the fish healthy.

Anyways, thank you so very much for the breathtaking Discus fish!!

    i!

We received the fish last night, they seem to be doing well, they were definitely stressed from the long shipping but seem much better this morning! The yellow one was sideways on the bottom at first and was shaking/convulsions on and off so we turned the lights out. It seems to have bounced back this morning. The two red ones ate right away when fed this morning, the yellow one won’t eat yet but hoping it will eat later after more time to acclimate.

Totally understand the shipping is out of your control but seems like a long route considering they appear to have been shipping from Miami, we are in Longwood (right outside of Orlando) and they were shipped from Miami to Louisville, KY and then back to Orlando, then were on the ups truck from 8 am to 7:15 pm! Again understand you have to rely on the shipper, just seems there should be a more direct route for the poor guys! The water was chilly for discus but we floated them for a while (30-35 minutes) before putting them into the tank to slowly warm them back up.

Absolutely the best looking discus we have ever seen! Never seen such brilliant colors and markings, very healthy looking fish!! Very impressed.

My tank is 125 gallons, with two enheim canister filters, and a fluval lamp. The ph is 7.4, so it took me a while to raise their ph levels from the 6.4 liquid they came in. The temp is 84. There is wood and plants, with lots of places to hide.

Their tank mates are two angels, five clown loaches, seven cardinal tetras, one African cichlid (been behaving so far), and two Diamondback Terrapins who have never known fish to be food and have lived with them for seventeen years.

The discus are starting to come out more, and swim in smaller groups. Two are less confident, and tend to hide more. Their coloring looks good and has been improving each day. I think they are doing well. Fingers crossed. I’ll include some photos.

Thanks again, I’m thrilled to have begun a Discus tank.

Michael, they all sparked up in a few hours. I did make a mistake and let the water in the bags into the tank. Its new water settled for a week, then one week with about 8 small fish, 2 crayfish and a snail. I am running 2 filters (75 Gal rating for each) on each side of my 65 Gallon aquarium and they have the bio filters that spin in front as the water exists the filter. I have a bag to absorb hardness in one filter. The water yesterday (before the intro of new fish) tested perfect in all the 5 test areas. PH is 7.0. Water temp 76 degrees. From Michael: Your water temperature is way too cold. Check my FAQs page for correct params.

The fish all seem to be safe and sound, so far. However, from looking at the fish and my order, they don't seem to match. I don't have the Ocean Green Discus. Also, I don't seem to have the Turquoise Heckel Cross Discus. That one is concerning since it was one of the most expensive fish in the order. I tried to attach a video but it's too large. So I am attaching pics. Perhaps I am misidentifying the fish. Please advise. From Michael: Rest assured you received the correct strains. Do the numbers match up? Remember, many of my photos are taken out of water vs the in-water photos you are showing. In addition, fish that have recently landed are stressed and have been starved for 48 hours before I shipped them to you.

Hello Michael, we love our new fish & they are doing well in the new tank. They only thing I would have to say is the red based seems to have some fin rot going on, but other than that we will definitely be ordering more in the future! I wanted to ask if you have any recommendations on treating fin rot? Attached are the fishy’s:) From Michael: Not fin rot. Normal wear and tear from transit ammonia burns. Some Paraguard will clear it up within a week. It's a non-issue.

Ordered two 4-4.5” of the Golden Pigeon and to be honest, they don’t look much like the ones in the pic (sorry Michael). Not sure if maybe they’re just young or not yet acclimated but the ones in the other pics here are much prettier than the ones I have. The fishes seem a bit shy and on the thin side but they do eat. They’re not as round as I expected (or they haven’t spread their fins yet like the others). Hoping that they get rounder and more colorful as they get acclimated and mature. Please see pics :) From Michael: These probably weren't matched as correctly as I would have liked, but you didn't want to wait until my next shipment, so I had to make do with my current inventory. I'll contact you privately and rectify this particular selection with you.

Hi, all fish arrived good. The Germans are especially thriving and love to eat, the yellow one is catching on and seems to be acclimating. Unfortunately the golden pigeon did pass today. I’ve attached a photo, not the best but unsure of how to take it. That one was the most bright and colorful so we are sad it did not make it. We love the quality of all of the fish and their unique personality. I’ve also attached a photo of the 3 that are doing great.

I’m going to post some pics tomorrow. But I just had to let you know that. I was very happy with the fish. I’m not going to lie. I read reviews on Google about your site using pics of fish that weren't actually available. And the site sends out different discus than ordered. I'm glad I didn’t listen to those reviews and just decided to order. A few of the tetra's didn’t make it. But I know that is normal. Since I’ve ordered them online before, I knew that wasn’t an issue. All the discus are all swimming around. Even started eating not too long after putting them in the tank. Like I said I'm going to upload pics tomorrow. And I will leave a review. From Michael: Hi Trameka, thank you for your note. There's an old saying that goes like this: "the taller the tree, the more wind it catches." As the #1 discus seller in the world, we certainly catch our fair share of wind. At the end of the day, our customers seem to always come back to us for more. I guess it has something to do with our free shipping offer coupled with the impeccable quality of fish we sell. Please be mindful that most--not all of the negative “reviews” you read out there were not submitted by actual customers, but were actually planted by competitors, most of whom have since gone out of business a few years back. That said, there are indeed legitimate reviews out there from situations I wasn't able to or didn’t have the opportunity to perfectly address. Sometimes, customers make the mistake of being too hasty to post instead of attempting to rectifying the issue directly with me.

Good morning, yes they got here safely! All still alive. I really appreciate you picking me some beautiful first time Discus for me. No, I have no other Discus but I am gonna be ordering 2 or 3 more from you cause I have 2 more picked out already lol. But I have a 55 gallon tank so I think maybe 2 for sure. I do still have the light turned off still. I just put it on for a sec to take a picture for you. But I hope you know I'm so happy that I found you to order from. I have stage 4 endometriosis and I learned over the years dealing with it. I hope I can be the best Discus mom that I can be! I have read almost everything you have on your page over and over. So...I hope to definitely keep these babies safe and well. I'm definitely looking forward to getting the last 2 I would love to get! I hope if you don't mind if I do run into something if I may contact you to help me though? But hopefully I don't..lol but thank you so very much again for making me a new Discus mom! Have a Merry Christmas :) From Michael: Of course you may contact me any time. He seemed stressed from the shipping, but I held out hope. Unfortunately when I arrived this morning, he was dead. I don’t expect a refund or a replacement since it has been a couple days since they arrived, but I just wanted to let you know.

    P.S.

These fish were purchased for a small family owned aquarium and our guests are very delighted with the new discus!

Dear Mr. Li: After receiving a shipping, I noticed the Red Fuji Discus has a lot of black spots on gills and fins. I though that was from the natural born, but after 2 days, others fish stated having black spots on gills, fins, and body. On the day three, all the fish got it. I started raised the temperature to 88 and used API-General Cure for treatment. Try to hold off my second shipment for one week or two. Anything I can do to help my fish. I am new to discus. Thank you, An From Michael: The small black spots are what is called peppering in discus. It is normal for any pigeon strain, and does not indicate the fish are sick.

Natural Habitat for Discus

Discus are found in floodplain lakes and flooded forests of the lowland Amazon River basin and some of its tributaries, including the Rio Negro.  These areas experience extreme changes in water level due to seasonal flooding.  Discus tend to congregate near fallen trees, known as “galhadas”, along the shore.  They prefer quiet water, and are rarely found in areas where there is strong current or wave action.

Discus Water Requirements

Discus prefer warm, soft, acidic water.  pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0, with hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm).  Temperature should be kept between 82° and 89° F. Water conditions for both wild and hybrid discus are the same. While captive bred discus can be kept in dechlorinated tap water  reverse osmosis or deionized water supplemented will ensure the the best conditions. Discus require pristine water quality, and depending on the filtration system being used, a weekly or bi-weekly water change of 10% to 25% is highly recommended. Don’t forget to treat tap water with conditioner before refilling your aquarium!

Housing Requirements for Discus

Discus grow to be quite large, and full sized discus will require an aquarium of 50 gallons or larger when they reach adult size.  Tall aquariums are best, to accommodate their body shape.  Current should be gentle, and décor if used at all should include large broadleaf plants and driftwood that is arranged vertically to simulate downed branches and trees.  A few floating plants can also be added to provide shaded areas and cover. Substrate should be fine to medium grade and smooth surfaced, as discus like to forage along the bottom for food.

Discus Behavior/Compatibility

Discus are generally calm, peaceful fish, but as cichlids they can be aggressive toward one another, especially when attempting to pair off and spawn.  Shy or submissive fish should be removed if they are unable to compete. Most serious hobbyists do not mix their discus with too many other species. However, suitable aquarium mates include cardinal tetras, neons, emperor and rummy nose tetras, as well as clown loaches and dwarf cichlids such as rams and Apistogramma species. All of these fish tolerate the high temperatures and low pH/hardness required by discus.

What do Discus Eat?

In nature discus eat a considerable amount of plant material and detritus, but also forage along the bottom looking for worms and small crustaceans.  They are omnivores and will thrive on freeze dried black worms, beefheart, frozen blood worms, and a variety of pellet and flake food. Frozen and live foods may be fed as treats or to help induce spawning.  For best results, rotate their diet daily and feed only what they can consume in 2 to 3 minutes, once or twice a day.

Discus Breeding Level – Difficult

Captive bred discus will pair up and spawn relatively easily, but young, inexperienced parents may eat their eggs the first few times, particularly if other fish are present.  After hatching the young feed on heavy body mucus secreted by the parents for a few days until they begin to free-swim.  Parents will transfer the young back and forth several times a day.

Q: How are your stated fish measurements conducted?
